Beautiful antique Art Deco natural cherry red Baltic amber Faturan necklace. It is 25 in length and weighs 65 grams. The beads go from 27mm x 16mm on the center bead, to 15mm x 10mm on the smallest bead. It also has a period authentic double bead screw-in clasp (1920s-1930s).
HISTORY: Faturan is a mixture of natural Baltic amber shavings and other natural resins, invented in the 18th century and continuing until the 1940's when WWII made the materials harder to obtain. This is when Bakelite became the prominent choice of bead and jewelry makers. TESTED: The necklace tested negative for Bakelite with simi chrome.
Instead of the usual yellow color, it turned a dark orange color. The necklace tested positive for holding a static charge. This is the test for real Baltic amber.
Please see the pictures for the simi chrome test, and the statically charged beads picking up paper chads. This indicates a high level of natural red amber in the necklace. Bakelite is a man-made plastic which does not hold a static charge. The necklace was recently re-strung and is in e xcellent overall condition. One bead has a small chip. Please see the last picture.
